This in-depth study examines the life of Nehemiah. Who was Nehemiah and what can you learn from this Jewish leader who lived during the time of the Persian Empire? One part of the study looks at the prayers of Nehemiah and from his prayers we learn about his understanding of God. Nehemiah 9 includes one of the longest prayers in Scripture and it is a beautiful record of God’s relationship with His people Israel. This study also focuses on portions of the history of Israel that led to the events in the time of Nehemiah. Because of the importance of the psalms, most of the daily lessons close by studying a psalm whose message connects with Israel’s circumstances in the post-exilic era. While the book of Nehemiah is a historical record of Israel’s return to Jerusalem during the Persian reign, the message of the book also has relevance for followers of Christ who live in the 21st century. Because this is an inductive study, it carefully observes the texts of Scripture, interprets the original intent of the passage, and challenges the student to claim the eternal principles that are to be applied for all those who follow Jesus Christ.

The lessons include homework that provides options for the students and could be done in one to three hours each week. When a group is meeting weekly to discuss the lessons, each student will benefit from the review discussion suggested by possibilities in the accompanying leader’s guide.
